Youth Advisory Committee to Address Disproportionality in the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Systems

The development of a youth advisory committee comprised of youth of color who are aging out of the system and who were involved in the juvenile justice system, the foster care system or as cross-over youth involved in both systems is being explored.

The idea would be to engage youth in a meaningful way as focus is directed on the issues of racial disproportionality and possible remedies in both systems.  The youth advisory/ leadership committee could provide recommendations for system change and could potentially direct attention to more inclusive work in areas such as restorative justice and diversion efforts.

Initial efforts are being explored in the Phoenix area and the planning group is now seeking to identify participants.   We would love to include a diverse group of participants who can share their stories and ideas with us. If you know of you know of someone who may be interested please let us know.  Some particular areas of concern include youth tried as adults for non-violent offenses and or youth experiencing homelessness after being removed from their homes.
