Call for Action- Support H.R. 1498 (2017) Racial Profiling Must End!

H.R. 1498– End Racial Profiling Act of 2017 seeks to eliminate racial profiling by law enforcement at the federal, state, and local level. It prohibits profiling based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or gender.

An effective anti-racial profiling law should also include data collection components should outlaw violations of the racial profiling ban with specified penalties, and should allow individuals to seek legal relief through the courts.

The National Juvenile Justice Network (Oct. 2017) stated that making public available local data on policing practices of youth including arrest, diversion, and use of force should be a priority in efforts to end racial profiling. Data should include neighborhood, race, ethnicity, disability, gender, nationality, and sexual identity.
The report states that law enforcement officers need to be required to collect data on all stops and searches (traffic and pedestrian) in all circumstances (warnings and citations given). Data should include perceived race, perceived gender, perceived age, perceived nationality, and whether immigration status was inquired about during the stop. The data should be required to be analyzed and made publicly available as well as to be regularly published.
