New book: A Seat at the Table highlights work of Shirley Chisholm that led to the passage of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974. A major component of this legislation is to address racial disproportionality in the justice system that still remains today.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA). Signed into law on September 7, 1974, the Act established OJJDP and charged the agency with supporting local and state efforts to prevent delinquency and improve the justice system. The JJDPA is up for Reauthorization this year, and support is needed for the current efforts to educate and advocate for congressional reauthorization. Senators Whitehouse and Grassley recently introduced a bi-partisan JJDPA Reauthorization bill.
